What the Research Can—and Cannot—Tell You About a Suspected Dive

Findings link classified dives to higher-reward situations and leagues where referees rewarded them more often—not a body-language test.
The relevant 2011 study treated the whole dive as a potentially deceptive signal from player to referee. It found more classified dives in situations offering a greater potential reward and in leagues where referees rewarded them more often. It did not establish a body-language test for diagnosing individual incidents. The familiar “archer’s-bow” posture and related movement cues came from separate research published in 2010.
The short answer: the dive was the deceptive signal
The paper was Receivers Limit the Prevalence of Deception in Humans: Evidence from Diving Behaviour in Soccer Players. It was published in PLOS ONE on October 5, 2011, as volume 6, issue 10, article e26017, DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0026017.
Its purpose was to examine simulation in soccer as a real-world example of human deception through signalling theory—not to create a checklist of physical tells for referees.
In that model:
- The player is the sender.
- The fall is the signal that a foul occurred.
- The referee is the receiver who must interpret that signal.
- A free kick or penalty is a possible reward.
- Detection, loss of possession or punishment can make attempted deception more costly.
Two studies that are often confused
Morris and Lewis’s Tackling diving: the perception of deceptive intentions in association football (soccer) appeared in the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior in 2010, not 2011. Its abstract describes three studies addressing observer agreement, correspondence between judgments and players’ stated intentions, and a taxonomy of associated behaviours. The authors concluded that deceptive intention was observable “to a degree”—a more cautious finding than saying it can always be identified accurately. How the 2011 researchers classified a dive
The researchers reviewed 60 televised matches, comprising 10 matches from each of six high-profile professional leagues. They recorded 2,803 falls, including 169 classified dives and 2,633 classified tackles, reported as approximately 6% and 94%, respectively. Those two counts total 2,802, one fewer than the paper’s stated total. The paper does not resolve that discrepancy; it should not be silently assigned to another category. A dive was operationally defined as an intentional imitation of a tackle-induced fall involving minimal or no contact from an opponent. A tackle was a fall caused by opponent contact. The distinction therefore required an interpretation of both visible contact and whether the player appeared to be intentionally imitating a contact-induced fall.
One observer performed the primary classification using real-time footage, replays, slow motion, multiple camera angles and high-definition video. That differs substantially from live officiating: the observer could revisit an incident and inspect views that might not have been available to the referee at match speed.
What happened across the 60 matches
The study found a small but strategically meaningful category of classified dives among a much larger number of tackle-induced falls. The exact averages and reward rates below come from the primary study’s reported results.

An archived contemporary Soccer Science account of the study likewise reported that diving occurred most often on the attacking side of the field and with scores tied. It also reported that players dived more frequently in leagues where referees were more likely to reward classified dives.
The league result should be described as an association, not a causal finding. A greater chance of receiving a free kick or penalty could make simulation more attractive, but the study could not establish that referee decisions caused the differences. Officials might have differed in detection ability, players might have differed in simulation skill, or other league-level factors might have contributed.
The visible cues came from separate research
The behavioural-cue literature associated four movement patterns with obvious or deceptive falls:
- An archer’s-bow posture.
- A discontinuity between contact and the player’s reaction.
- Exaggeration of the apparent effect of the force.
- A mismatch between the actual contact location and the location implied by the reaction.
The archer’s bow describes a fall in which the arms rise backward, the chest is thrust forward and the legs bend at the knees. The other cues concern timing, magnitude and spatial consistency: whether the reaction followed the contact continuously, appeared proportionate to the force and corresponded with the actual point of contact. These four cues are summarized in later peer-reviewed research discussing Morris and Lewis’s work.
They are prompts for closer review, not proof of intent. Observer agreement is not the same as perfect diagnostic accuracy.
